Astronauts are highly trained and privileged individuals and as of 2008, a total of 489 astronauts from 38 countries have reached low earth orbit or beyond. Of those people, only 24 people have traveled beyond to lunar or trans-lunar orbit or to the surface of the moon.
As of year 2008, Sergei K. Krikalev is the man with the longest time in space. He has spent 803 days, 9 hours and 39 minutes, or 2.2 years in space. The woman who holds the record for longest time in space is Peggy A. Whitson at 377 days.
The term “Astronaut” is used by NASA for any crew member aboard NASA spacecraft bound for Earth orbit or beyond. The original term astronaut derives from the Greek words astron, meaning “star” and nautes, meaning “sailor”.
An astronaut is a person trained by a spaceflight program to be a crew member or pilot of a spacecraft. It is usually saved for professional space travelers. Until year 2003 astronauts were trained by the military or governments or space agencies. However, in 2004, SpaceShipOne was created. It is a privately funded organization that trains commercial astronauts.
Thinking you might like to be an astronaut? The NASA requirements for astronauts are to be U.S. citizens, pass a physical exam, and have 20/20 eye sight and blood pressure of 140 over 90. Candidates must also have a bachelor’s degree in engineering, biological science, physical science or math. At least 1,000 flying time as pilot-in-command of jet aircraft, and be between 5ft 4 inches and 6ft 4 inches tall.
Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. Buzz Aldrin was the second and both on Apollo 11. Armstrong and Aldrin spent over two and a half hours on the moon. They took a call from President Nixon, collected core and rock samples, deployed the Early Apollo Scientific Experimental Package, raised a US Flag, and took photographs. Amazing indeed.
